Stately in Pearls

girl with the pearl earring

Whether as an accent on your wrist, a final touch on a scarf or a delicate touch on the earlobes- pearls are a go-to accessory.

In the Islamic-Judeo-Christian tradition they are used to evoke images of the beauty of the hereafter. For instance in the Qur’an:

22:23 God will admit those who believe and work righteous deeds, to Gardens beneath which rivers flow: they shall be adorned therein with bracelets of gold and pearls; and their garments there will be of silk.

In the New Testament:

Matthew 13: 45-46. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a merchant man, seeking goodly pearls: Who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had, and bought it.

Many of us knew about Johannes Vermeer’s famous painting ” Girl With a Pearl Earring” even before Scarlett Jo tied her hair in a bonnet and got all pale  for the 2003 film.

Post-80s fashion- pearls don’t have to just be matched with your Sunday best.  You can wear them when dressing up or down-their unique appeal always comes through.

Simply Beautiful Braids

I love the look and feel of braided hair. Twist braids together-intertwine ribbon-insert real or fake flowers and your hair has become art. Frida Kahlo took this to another level.

Yesterday in the supermarket I was style stalking. You know what I mean-you see another woman with a look that screams original and beautiful and you kind of follow her around. Well actually I was loc stalking. This women had dark gorgeous locs flowing down her back. And you know what she did?

She had braided sections of them together and tied them into a ponytail with a burnt orange ribbon. Super cute. Super simple and elegantly understated.

I love braided hair because when you take them out you have a whole new hair texture. I love braids because they are demure. I love braided hair because it is just pretty.

Bohemian Rhapsody

Amelie Chiffon Dress

Amelie chiffon dress by Igigi

Do you remember the movie Amelie? Audrey Tatou’s supercute haircut, her wide eye glances and hand over mouth giggles. Such a whimsical pixie-right? I’m not sure if Igigi meant to conjure up memories of that film with this gorgeous chiffon dress but instantly I connected it’s beautiful  bodice and flowing skirt to the romance of Amelie, the movie.
